Technology
Ammunition In Free Space, standard ballistic ammunition is still commmonly used, as it cheap and easy to mass produce. However, there are a few independent companies, as well as Kovolis, that produce 'laser' technology. It uses a highly reactive substance which heats up rapidly when put into a pressurized space and is released. It is inside a bullet-like capsule that when it has its back end punctured by the mechanism of the gun, it spurts out the material inside, which sends it flying out of the gun’s barrel. Once out of the barrel, the reactive substance inside then heats up to a plasma-like form and melts away the bullet casing, but still retains the bullet’s original form. Depending on the amount of the inside material and the size of the round, the energy can be from a standard red for weapons used by a single person, or blue for starship and vehicle weapons. Some companies mix other minerals into the casing to give the energy a certain pigment, giving it various other colors like green and purple. In the end, Kovolis is still producing superior weapons to their Free Space counterparts.
Starship Classifications All starships classify into a certain group compared to their dimensions, crew size, cargo space, and in some cases armament. These are the classes:
Interceptor-Class: These are small, extremely fast and agile ships controlled by only one person. They are incapable of carrying loads of cargo due to the entirety of the ship being taken up by cockpit controls, life support or engines, and any cargo would disturb the Interceptor’s flight capabilities. Due to its small size, it cannot carry a large amount of fuel, and has to refuel frequently. Most free space ships under this class are modified racing ships, while Kovolis has properly built interceptors.
Gunboat-Class: Gunboats are starships that are larger than the usual interceptor, and can carry about 1-3 people onboard as well as cargo, more weaponry and other electronic features. They are heavier than the Inderceptor-Class ships, which makes for better armoring, but slower maneuverability. This class is commonly used in Kovolis for recon operations, due to its small size and larger fuel capacity than interceptors.
Freighter-Class: The most commonly used of the starship classes, freighters are ships that can have roughly 8-10 people onboard, but only needs one person to pilot it at the minimum. Out of the classes, it could arguably be called one of the more versatile ship classes, due to their relatively smaller size, decent fuel storage size, cheap price and excellent cargo space. Many originally don’t have armament, but aftermarket parts are commonly added for self protection or for other means. They usually have a moderate amount of maneuverability, but can be modified.
Light Cargo Transport/Frigate-Class: Frigate-Class ships are what you usually see patrolling around in Kovolis space, as well as flying out with shipments of an assortment of goods. Large enough to hold 20 or so people onboard, but at the same time needing more than one person to pilot, frigates are expensive and hard to maintain if you’re an independent. Many of the smaller companies and Kovolis use these to transport things like deliveries, or other things that are not in bulk. They are heavy, but not hard to maneuver around if necessary.
Standard Cargo Transport/Public Transport Ships: This class of ship is what most companies will use for transporting goods in bulk, or heavier goods. They are also used for public transport, transporting thousands of people to a number of planets and stations. They have the capability to keep other ships inside them, though not usually a large amount.
Heavy Cargo Transport/Troop Carriers: The largest out of the commonly made ship classes, these starships are used for carrying heavy loads of goods from planet to planet on long journeys, and can hold many ships inside it if need be. They are also used for carrying Kovolis troops if the need arises, though seeing a troop carrier just flying by is rather uncommon. They are the most expensive to mass produce, and are less in number than a standard cargo transport.
Pioneer Ships: Only built for the function of making new jump gates, pioneer ships are essential to colonization of other planets and the expansion of Kovolis Industries. Leviathan in size, pioneer ships have some of the most sophisticated life-support systems out there, and are able to sustain a work crew as well as a ship crew over several months. They have the cargo capacity for the materials to build the jump gates, and also contain their own single-use jump drive core so they can get to the location they will build their gate, and take the new gate back home once complete.
Transit Due to the fact that many people don’t have the time, money, or need to buy, build and maintain a starship of their own, public transit ships are what most people use to go from system to system. The ships can usually hold 750 passengers onboard, and about 20 crew members on average. It is also hold about two to four interceptors onboard, depending on the model. The ship is split into two sections, Standard and Premium. Standard class is where most passengers sit, and are fairly standard in comfort. Premium is usually used by Kovolis officials, scientists and businessmen, and has fairly higher quality service than Standard. Public transport is easily found both in free space or Kovolis, with Kovolis creating its own public network and smaller, free space companies working out of Cielo. Travelling between Kovolis and Cielo, however, requires a heftier fee than usual, as well as a lot of paperwork and red tape.
Starship Shielding Shields for starships have become a relatively new technology, and has only emerged in the last decade or so. They are standard issue on Kovolis craft, but shields are usually only capable of absorbing a certain amount of shots from another ship before overheating and becoming temporarily useless. In free space, they are rather expensive and hard to come by, and most ships are only with an armored hull.
The Comnet With the creation of the jump gates came to the creation of instant interstellar communication, or what is known as the Comnet. It is readily available to both Kovolis and free-space due to the fact that every single jump gate has a com array built into it. The Comnet is used to not just communicate with others across known space, but it is used to post bounties, advertisements, and almost everything in between. The KSS uses private channels for communication unlike everyone else, however. The same goes for most of the smaller companies and organizations in free space, but KSS channels are far harder to hack into, although not in any way impossible.
